How to make alphabet tracing worksheets

  1. 1. Pick the letters

All 26, or just the letters you are working on this week. Choose capitals, lowercase or both.

  2. 2. Pick a style if you like

Dotted lines, grey letters or a dashed outline, how many rows, starting dots and paper size.

  3. 3. Download and print

One PDF with a page per letter. Print it at 100% (or "Actual size") so the lines keep their height.

Tips for tracing letters

Start with the letters in their name

Children care most about the letters they already know from their own name. They make a good first set.

Group letters that move the same way

Straight-line capitals like L, T, I, E, F and H are easier first. Round letters like C, O, G and Q come next, then diagonals like A, K, M, V, W, X, Y and Z.

Capitals, then lowercase

Capitals are bigger and simpler, so many children learn them first. Pair each capital with its lowercase letter once they are confident.

Follow the dot

The dot shows where to put the pencil down. Starting each letter in the same place every time helps it come out the same way.

One letter a day is plenty

A page a day, or a couple of rows, keeps it short and fun. Come back to the tricky letters later in the week.

Use it more than once

Slip the page into a clear sheet protector and trace with a dry-erase marker. Wipe it clean and go again.

Coloring page of a girl as a princess in a castle

Now make them the hero of a coloring page

Upload one photo and your child becomes an astronaut, a superhero or a princess on a page they can color.

Frequently asked questions

Are these alphabet tracing worksheets free?▾
Yes. Pick the letters, download the PDF and print as many as you like. There is no sign-up and no email.
What is on each page?▾
One letter per page. The top row shows the letter in solid ink as a model, then rows of the letter to trace across the page, then an empty row to write it alone. With "both" chosen, the first half of the rows are capitals and the rest lowercase.
Can I print just a few letters?▾
Yes. Tap letters on or off and the PDF has only those pages, in alphabet order.
Which handwriting style is it?▾
Dotted lines use a simple single-line print alphabet. Grey letters and dashed outlines come in Print, made for early readers with an "a" like the one children write, and Rounded print. None of them follow a particular school handwriting program, so check the shapes against what your child's school teaches.
What age are they for?▾
They are made for preschool and kindergarten. Every child is ready at a different time, so start with fewer rows (bigger letters) and add rows as they get comfortable.
US Letter or A4?▾
Both. The tool picks the usual paper size for your country and you can switch it in the settings. Print at 100% or "Actual size" so the handwriting lines keep their height.
