How to make a name tracing worksheet

  1. 1. Type the name

The worksheet appears next to the box as you type. For a class, switch to the class list and put one name per line.

  2. 2. Pick a style if you like

Dotted lines, grey letters or a dashed outline. Choose capitals, how many rows, starting dots and paper size.

  3. 3. Download and print

Save the PDF and print it at 100% (or "Actual size") so the lines come out at the right height.

Tips for practicing a name

Start with the first letter

The first letter of their name is usually the one children care about most. It is a good letter to practice on its own before the whole name.

Capitals first, then lowercase

Many children write their name in capitals at first. When they are ready, switch the setting to "Name" so they practice one capital followed by lowercase letters, the way names are written.

A few minutes a day

Tracing one or two rows at a time works better than a whole page in one go. Stop while it is still fun and come back tomorrow.

Follow the dot

The dot shows where to put the pencil down for each letter. Starting in the same place every time helps each letter come out the same way.

Say the letters out loud

Naming each letter while tracing it links the shape to its name and sound.

Use it more than once

Slip the page into a clear sheet protector and trace with a dry-erase marker. Wipe it clean and go again.

Coloring page of a girl as a princess in a castle

Now make them the hero of a coloring page

Upload one photo and your child becomes an astronaut, a superhero or a princess on a page they can color.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?▾
Yes. Making, downloading and printing worksheets is free, with no limit on how many you make.
Do I need an account?▾
No. Type a name and download the PDF. There is no sign-up and no email.
Can I make worksheets for a whole class?▾
Yes. Choose "Make a worksheet for my whole class" and put one name per line, up to 40 names. You get one PDF with a page for each child, all with the same letter size and settings.
Which handwriting style is it?▾
There are three tracing styles. Dotted lines use a simple single-line print alphabet. Grey letters and dashed outlines come in two letter shapes: Print, made for early readers with an "a" like the one children write, and Rounded print, a softer, chunkier letter. None of them follow a particular school handwriting program, so check the letter shapes against what your child's school teaches.
Which names work?▾
Letters A to Z, accented letters such as é, ñ and ü, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. Mary-Kate, O'Brien and Zoé all work. Names can be up to 24 letters long; long names print a little smaller so they fit the page.
US Letter or A4?▾
Both. The tool picks the usual paper size for your country and you can switch it in the settings. Print at 100% or "Actual size" so the handwriting lines keep their height.
Is my child's name stored anywhere?▾
No. The worksheet is made in your browser. The name never leaves your device: it is not uploaded, stored or logged.
