How to teach cursive writing
Start with letter groups
Many programs teach lowercase letters in groups that begin with the same stroke. For example, a, c, d, g, o and q all start with a curve like a c. Practice one group before the next.
Lowercase before capitals
Children write lowercase letters far more often, so most programs teach them first. Capitals come once the lowercase joins feel easy.
Practice the joins
The hardest part of cursive is the line between letters, especially after b, o, v and w, where the join leaves from the top. The "Common joins" list practices exactly those.
Keep the slant even
Turn the paper slightly, about the angle of the writing arm, so the letters lean the same way. The tracing letters show the slant to copy.
Relaxed grip, short sessions
Hold the pencil loosely, a little back from the tip. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session.
Say it while you trace
Naming each letter while tracing it links the shape to the letter, just as with print.
