How to teach cursive writing

Start with letter groups

Many programs teach lowercase letters in groups that begin with the same stroke. For example, a, c, d, g, o and q all start with a curve like a c. Practice one group before the next.

Lowercase before capitals

Children write lowercase letters far more often, so most programs teach them first. Capitals come once the lowercase joins feel easy.

Practice the joins

The hardest part of cursive is the line between letters, especially after b, o, v and w, where the join leaves from the top. The "Common joins" list practices exactly those.

Keep the slant even

Turn the paper slightly, about the angle of the writing arm, so the letters lean the same way. The tracing letters show the slant to copy.

Relaxed grip, short sessions

Hold the pencil loosely, a little back from the tip. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session.

Say it while you trace

Naming each letter while tracing it links the shape to the letter, just as with print.

Learn the cursive letters one by one

Each cursive letter, capital and lowercase, has its own page with simple steps, joins, words and a printable worksheet. The full chart is on the cursive alphabet page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my own cursive worksheets?▾
Type the words or sentences you want in the box at the top of this page, one practice line per line, or pick a ready-made list. Choose dotted, dashed or grey letters and a line size, then download the PDF. Each line gets a solid example to copy, tracing rows and an empty row to write it alone.
How do you write in cursive?▾
Keep the pencil on the paper until the word is finished: each lowercase letter flows into the next with a small connecting stroke. Small letters fit between the baseline and the dashed middle line, tall letters such as b, h, k and l loop up to the top line, and f, g, j, p, q, y and z reach below the baseline. Keep a steady slant to the right, then dot the i's and j's and cross the t's and x's when the word is done. Each letter has its own step-by-step page in the cursive alphabet.
What grade learns cursive?▾
Many US schools introduce cursive in second or third grade, once children print confidently. Older children and adults use the same worksheets with the medium or small line size.
Is it free?▾
Yes. Making, downloading and printing worksheets is free, with no limit on how many you make.
Do I need an account?▾
No. Type your words and download the PDF. There is no sign-up and no email.
Which cursive style is it?▾
Traditional US cursive, the joined style taught in many American schools, with looped letters such as b, f, k and l. Letter shapes differ a little between handwriting programs, so check them against what your child's school uses.
What can I type?▾
Letters A to Z, accented letters such as é, ñ and ü, numbers and everyday punctuation. Up to 12 lines and 400 letters per worksheet. Long lines continue on the next practice line.
Which line size should I pick?▾
Large lines suit kindergarten and first grade, medium suits second and third grade, and small suits fourth grade and up, or adults. Measured from the top line to the baseline, they are 3/4 inch, 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch.
Can I print a cursive alphabet chart?▾
Yes. The cursive alphabet page has the chart of capital and lowercase letters A to Z as a PDF or an image, plus a page for every letter. For tracing practice, switch the tool to Alphabet to get one worksheet page per letter.
Can I make print handwriting worksheets too?▾
Yes. Choose Print in the worksheet settings to get the same worksheet in simple print letters.
US Letter or A4?▾
Both. The tool picks the usual paper size for your country and you can switch it in the settings. Print at 100% or "Actual size" so the lines keep their height.
Is what I type stored anywhere?▾
No. The worksheet is made in your browser. What you type never leaves your device: it is not uploaded, stored or logged.
